BMW E28 M5 For sale

What is it?

The Original Q-car, hand-built by BMW Motorsport in Garching the E28 M5 set the template for a super saloon dynasty that’s lasted almost three decades, when launched in 1985 it was the fastest four-door car on sale and has an M1 motor in it!

In recent years the E28 M5 has been riding an unstoppable wave of increased popularity and soaring values driven by contemporary road testers championing the utter brilliance of the car. Finding an example is extremely difficult let alone a good one!

What’s it got?

Being an M car it came with a high standard specification, this Alpine White example comes with heated and electrically adjustable leather sports seats finished beautifully in Pacific blue, rear head restraints, fully functioning air conditioning, electric windows, electric sunroof, rear window blind, top tinted windscreen and a multi-function computer. Externally, refurbished BBS 16inch Alloys with new tyres and the M-Technic body kit complete the cars purposeful appearance.

How does it drive?

Out on the road the reality is that the M5 not only represents the origin of a species, but a driving experience that is truly special. The ride is surprising compliant compared to moderns standards.

Getting into an E28 M5 today is a very special experience for many reasons, the seats are exceptional, the electric seat buttons are a work of art, the airy cabin offers a view not found in modern cars, the 24-valve, 3.5-litre ‘M88’ motor, originally designed for the M1, is an absolute peach offering an in-period recorded 0-62mph time of 6.0sec and a blistering 0-100mph time of just over 15sec. This car has done 191,000 miles but still revs amazingly sweetly past 6000rpm with a rasping tone further enhanced by the stainless exhaust system. The suspension set up, the LSD and rear-wheel drive combination allow the car to be driven with confidence exploring the exceptionally rewarding handling characteristics.

Why this one?

Bought new in 88 from Barons this example comes with low ownership and a solid service history, the current owner has completed an extensive refurbishment program to include a full respray, mechanical and suspension/brakes refurbishment and works to the engine to include a new timing chain and tension puller.

All of this results in an extremely usable example, all handbooks and dealer guides are present along with hard copy MOTs.

Back in 1988 not only would this have been an expensive car, but it was a choice offered to very few people, being no 172 of only 187 right hand drive cars puts you in a very exclusive club.

With E30 M3 values topping £100k in recent years, we believe the E28 M5 still hasn’t reached its full potential in the classic market.

It’s an iconic slice of history that just happens to be a huge amount of fun to drive.
