What is it?
About the Vauxhall Astra SXi:
With the Mark 4 Astra range, Vauxhall waved goodbye to dodgy build quality, mediocre dynamics and pudgy styling…
– RAC
Available with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, as with all classic cars it’s the ‘warm’ and ‘hot’ versions that appear first on the classic car radar. We’ve highlighted how classic car values work in the context of the Hot Hatch in this detailed blog.
The British Public first caught sight of the Astra G at the 1998 NEC Motor Show, and it would remain in production until 2009. A huge leap forward over the Astra F it replaced, whilst becoming on of Britain’s best selling cars the G would give rise to a number of ‘hot hatch’ varieties… including the SXI shown here.
What’s it got?
16 inch wheels, neat stickering and comfortable sports style seats made the Astra SXi a key contender against the Ford Focus. The SXI got colour coded bumpers and a range of vibrant colours, available as either a 3dr or 5dr variant.
How does it drive?
Fitted with a punchy little 1.6 litre engine, the SXI was sold in huge numbers. The Astra G offered fun handling and revvy, durable engines, making them hot property for all the usual suspects… Many met their demise which makes this car all the more unusual.
Why this one?
The Astra SXi shown here was purchased new by the current owner, who was then offered a company car. As a result this car enjoyed many years of careful storage and now shows rust 5,000 miles from new.
This incredible example has to be the only one in existence. The car still smells like new. In every way this is a virtually showroom fresh, 18 year old hot hatch.
