About the Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000:
What’s better than a BMW 535i and costs £7,000 less?
– Car Magazine, July 2006
The Vauxhall Carlton GSI 3000 was introduced to steal market share in the performance saloon bracket, showing BMW a thing or two and snapping at the heels of Ford’s immensely popular Cosworth range. Where the Bavarian, the ‘Cossie and Mercedes-Benz 190 2.5 have a well established presence on the classic car spectrum, the Carlton is the lesser known contender; though a contender it most certainly is (was).
With a 2969cc in-line six engine, the Carlton 3000 GSI 24V pushes out just north of 200bhp.
This gives a 0-62mph time of 7.6 seconds and a top speed of 149mph.
Famously in a 0-100mph dash, the Carlton was capable of outrunning the BMW 535i.
The Vauxhall Carlton GSi 3000 wasn’t a common site in 1993 and even less so now, According to ‘how many left’ just 12 are road registered!
